Located in the centre of Ireland, Kilkenny is close to the two largest cities in the country, only 90 minutes away from Dublin and 2 hours from Cork City.
Kilkenny is a typical European medieval town, with rich history, culture, cathedrals and a beautiful castle.
Kilkenny is the 7th biggest Irish city, with a population of 25,000, which is considered a small town. The size means it is easy to walk around Kilkenny or have short journeys on local public transportation.
The main attraction of the city is Kilkenny Castle, one of the most visited castles in Ireland. Another place not to forget is the art gallery inside the castle, which is free to enter and open to the public every day of the week.
In the grounds of the castle, there are two big gardens in which local people often have picnics and play sports.
With its medieval charm and beauty, Kilkenny is also famous for brewing (since the 17th century). Smithwick’s from Kilkenny is one of the most popular beer brands in Ireland.
Don’t forget to walk along the canal alongside the castle and take in the beautiful landscape.
The city is known as one of Ireland’s best destination for food/gastronomy, with a famous food fair called Savour Kilkenny in October. It takes place in a vast area quite close to Kilkenny Castle where you can taste some mouth-watering foods cooked by well known Irish chefs.
Enjoy the city when you choose to study English in Kilkenny. You will have the opportunity to learn more about Irish culture, and be surrounded by natural and historical beauty.
